What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a unique approach to improving your health and treating illness. It is based on strengthening and stimulating your body’s ability to heal itself while minimizing side-effects. It uses a combination of natural medicines and physical therapies. Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine (ND’s) are specialists in natural medicine and preventative health care, integrating scientific knowledge with traditional therapies.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I guide and help you achieve health by removing barriers to wellness while you are receiving treatment for your condition. The following treatment methods are used:

Nutritional Medicine

Nutritional Medicine, as practiced in naturopathic medicine, is the scientific study and use of food as the basic foundation for health. Proper nutrition and digestion are the most fundamental indicators of current and future well-being. If indicated, vitamin, minerals and natural substances are also incorporated to treat the deficiencies and disease process.

Acupuncture

Based on Traditional Chinese medicine, Naturopathic doctors employ acupuncture to stimulate energy in the body, relieve acute and chronic pain, or treat the underlying disease process. Acupuncture is useful in many conditions like insomnia, anxiety and depression to digestive and hormonal disorders.

Botanical Medicine

Herbs are used in its whole form to treat various common diseases. By using the whole herb, side-effects are minimized. The goal of Naturopathic doctors is to treat the condition without creating adverse effects.

Homeopathic Medicine

Natural substances, like plants and minerals, are used. Treatments is based on viewing the symptoms you present with as an outward manifestation of the disease process and using these signals to strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself rather than just eliminating or suppressing the symptoms. Physical conditions as well as mental and emotional problems can be helped with homeopathic medicine.

Naturopathic Bodywork

Includes several different types of hands-on treatments. Many physical complaints are treated using these therapies such as muscular pain and circulatory/ lymphatic disorders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What training do ND’s receive?

  • Nutrition
  • Botanical medicine
  • Acupuncture
  • Homeopathy

What illnesses and conditions can benefit?

  • Hypertension, Atherosclerosis, Heart pain
  • Digestive disorders, Constipation, IBS
  • Cancer and Autoimmune diseases
  • Endocrine disorders – thyroid, diabetes

What’s the difference between a Naturopathic Doctor and my family physician?

Family physicians (and physician specialists) are trained to recognize diseases. They focus on diagnosing and treating disease by killing a causative agent (using antibiotics) or by relieving symptoms (using pain killers) or by providing a synthetic substance (like hormones). Naturopathic physicians focus on strengthening the body using the above treatment methods to eliminate the illness or medical condition.

What should I expect on the first visit?

In order to understand the unique needs of each patient, your naturopathic assessment is very comprehensive, and quite different from a visit to your MD. You will be asked to complete a detailed health questionnaire, designed to help identify your health needs and to provide us with a complete medical history. Accurate and meaningful assessment is critical to make a precise diagnosis. As such, your first visit will be one hour in length. Follow up appointments average 30 minutes.

Does Alberta Health cover ND visits?

Naturopathic medicine is not currently covered by provincial health care. However, most private insurance plans cover naturopathic treatments.

Do I need to book and appointment?

Due to the limited number of hours, booking and appointment would be most convenient. However, we do accept walk-ins during our regular office hours.

Any concerns I should be aware of?

A governing body to ensure safe and ethical advice regulates naturopathic Doctors. However, the law currently does not protect the title Naturopathic doctor so people with different levels of training and knowledge may call themselves Naturopathic doctors. To ensure safety, always verify that your naturopathic doctor is a graduate of an accredited college and is licensed under the Alberta Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (AANP).
