What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a unique approach to improving your health and treating illness. It is based on strengthening and stimulating your body's ability to heal itself while minimizing side-effects. It uses a combination of natural medicines and physical therapies. Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine (ND’s) are specialists in natural medicine and preventative health care, integrating scientific knowledge with traditional therapies.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I guide and help you achieve health by removing barriers to wellness while you are receiving treatment for your condition. The following treatment methods are used:

Nutritional Medicine

Nutritional Medicine, as practiced in naturopathic medicine, is the scientific study and use of food as the basic foundation for health. Proper nutrition and digestion are the most fundamental indicators of current and future well-being. If indicated, vitamin, minerals and natural substances are also incorporated to treat the deficiencies and disease process.

Acupuncture

Based on Traditional Chinese medicine, Naturopathic doctors employ acupuncture to stimulate energy in the body, relieve acute and chronic pain, or treat the underlying disease process. Acupuncture is useful in many conditions like insomnia, anxiety and depression to digestive and hormonal disorders.

Botanical Medicine

Herbs are used in its whole form to treat various common diseases. By using the whole herb, side-effects are minimized. The goal of Naturopathic doctors is to treat the condition without creating adverse effects.

Homeopathic Medicine

Natural substances, like plants and minerals, are used. Treatments is based on viewing the symptoms you present with as an outward manifestation of the disease process and using these signals to strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself rather than just eliminating or suppressing the symptoms. Physical conditions as well as mental and emotional problems can be helped with homeopathic medicine.

Naturopathic Bodywork

Includes several different types of hands-on treatments. Many physical complaints are treated using these therapies such as muscular pain and circulatory/ lymphatic disorders.

Naturopathic physicians focus on strengthening the body using the above treatment methods to eliminate the illness or medical condition.

What should I expect on the first visit?

In order to understand the unique needs of each patient, your naturopathic assessment is very comprehensive, and quite different from a visit to your MD. Accurate and meaningful assessment is critical to make a precise diagnosis. As such, your first visit will be at least one hour to 1.5 hours. Follow up appointments average 30 minutes in length.
